Bi-National Servants "Week of Work' at SPC

General News

Kitty and Rick chose a unique venue for our July staff meeting.  We enjoyed the tranquility of the Japanese Garden here on the campus.  We were there to admire the work done last week by the Bi-National Servants "Week of Work" program.   The Bi-National Servants weeded and beautified the walkway and patio, and mulched the beds.  Their work paid tribute to the folks before them who designed and implemented the Japanese Garden.

We were thrilled to connect with this dedicated group as their mission intersects with the history and purpose of Stony Point Center.  Please read on for an interview with Bill Coop, former Council Chair and current Financial Secretary.

Testimonial From Huairou Commission

Editors Note:

We were blessed with a visit from The Huairou Commission.  We were pleased to support them in their good work.  The following is a letter we received from the Administrative Director:

May 30th, 2009

Beloved people of God at Stony Point:

Inside this envelope you will find words of appreciation for your fantastic hospitality ministry.  These cards represent the collective spirit of the members of the Huairou Commission.  Our time here has been immensely productive and this could not have happened without your incredible and intentional commitment to serve.  Know that your support has greatly contributed to many social justice issues around the globe.  Your care and loving ways has helped the empowerment of grassroots women all over the world to create safer cities, reclaim the land from which some groups (ethnics or widows) are forced out, have acess to the land as producers and head of households and safe housing in livable conditions, and also to alleviate and organize the communties affected by HIV/AIDS epidemic, as well as further developing our Governance campaign.

We are profoundly moved for your willingness to accomodate all of our needs, for your flexibility to do whatever it took to support the work we came to get done.

Both staff and volunteers were amazing and the love and care you gave us, was also spread among us, in turn it came back down to your grounds during our final circle of unity, affirmation of endless time, love and commitment to go into the world and continue the work we are called to do.  We are women working towards the empowerment of grassroots women all over the world.  In this gathering you were visited by women from Kenya, Uganda, South Africa, Russia, The Czech Republic, Philippines, Korea, India, Nepal, The Netherlands, Canada, The United States, Jamaica, Venezuela, Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala, Peru, Brazil, Argentina and probably, I am forgetting to name a few more countries at this time.

"Gun Violence and Gospel Values" Video Clips

Gun Violence has reached devastating proportions in the United States.  Concerned people gathered at Stony Point Center this past September to learn about gun violence and explore ways the Church of Jesus Christ can respond and live out its role to bring peace where there is violence.  Leading thinkers and organizers educated the attendees on how Gospel values can transform our culture's acceptance of gun violence.  The goal was to provide hands-on analysis and action ideas for how to lead us to build a culture of peace.

These clips are from Rev. Jim Atwood's Theological Reflection speech given at the conference.

"Lambs and Power"
