Presbyterian Peace Fellowship Convocation: April 15-17

The Presbyterian Peace Fellowship invites you into a hard conversation about nonviolence, the best way to respond to violence in our time, and the future of the church. Expect your own beliefs to be tested as we strategize about how best to follow Jesus' command to ‘love your enemies' in a world increasingly addicted to war.

This conference will be equal parts inspiration, introspection, learning, strategizing, and building up the community of followers of Jesus. The format includes keynote speeches by Rev. Dr. Obery Hendricks, workshops on skill building and current PPF work, and ‘open space' for convocation participants to set their own agenda.

Come to the Convocation and help shape the denomination's vision for peace.

Rev. Dr. Obery Hendricks is Professor of Biblical Interpretation at New York Theological Seminary and author of The Politics of Jesus: Rediscovering the True Revolutionary Nature of Jesus' Teachings and How They Have Been Corrupted.

Dr. Hendricks will reflect on the meaning of justice and its relationship to peace and nonviolence. Paying careful attention to the teachings of both Gandhi and King, he will challenge the participants to examine their own beliefs, reflect on the questions that are hardest for himself personally, and ask others to do the same.

The call for Workshop Proposals to IEPC -- International Ecumenical Peace Convocation 2011 -- is open until 5/31/2010 ... for info, search: IEPC "objectives and concepts" or IEPC "proposal form".  Contact Ray Foss at or through the Presbyterian Peace Fellowship Convocation: April 15-17, 2010, www.stonypointcenter.org who has submitted an IPEC workshop proposal (and 4-page scope document) on subject of: "The Need to Move Away from Debt, to Give Economic Hope" or "To Give Economic Hope -- The Need to Move Away from Debt-based Money" or "Spirituality and Economic Hope: To Thine False Self Bring Truth". Reason for offering this IEPC workshop: "While many in the financial community are familiar with the issue of growing debt, the religious community has not focused on the extent to which it, plus the related issue of growing income disparity, are causing increasing distress to people around the world. The world is finite, and we are now reaching resource constraints, making even the current level of debt unsustainable. We as a religious community need to take a leadership (discipleship) role in pressing for change, to help bring the world back to a model more like Christ would have wanted." Discipleship within the religious community should agonize on the difficult issue of systemic debt that threatens to bring down the global economic system and with it a dazed or indifferent church. Initial Draft Abstract:  A call to repentance and discernment within Christian discipleship is premised to transform their own (and others) critique of, and use of, debt-based money – the common currency of the world, and perhaps the world’s common curse. “Debt-free” forms of money not only appear desirably feasible but also seem capable of bringing change for the better to minds, hearts and hopefully, our great global problems. That can begin with robust “credit clearing”. Local and other complementary currency systems are advocated, and are described by Thomas Greco in his book, “The End of Money and the Future of Civilization” (2009). Spiritual healing of one’s false self is on “The Way” to full life.

Hi, I would really like to attend this important event but am unable due to an inflexible schedule. Just wondering if there might be a way to include in the discussion those of us unable to attend - such as video conferencing. Or will online videos be available of the discussions?  I already receive updates and online news from Presbyterian Peacemakers website so will keep an eye out... Does anyone know whether a follow-up 'action plan' is in the works and if so will it be posted on Presbyterian Peacemakers website?
